From grapes harvested on September 13, the 2021 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountain underwent carbonic maceration in amphorae and was matured in 100% new Damy Rubis barrels. It has a pure perfume of saline and strawberry, orange peel and spice, plus soaring floral perfume. The palate is powerful yet weightless: its concentrated core of fragrant fruit is delivered in a silky texture, and its vibrant acidity calls you back to the glass. It deserves 3–5 years in bottle to continue its evolution. Only 73 cases were made.

Rosy and perfumed, the 2021 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountain Old Vines opens with a burst of crushed strawberries, rosemary and hints of split pine. It’s soft and round with pretty wild berry fruits motivated by juicy acidity. A web of fine-grained tannins emerges through the finish as the 2021 tapers off long and potent, spicy, yet structured, leaving hints of licorice and inner lavender tones to fade slowly.

A completely different beast, the 2021 Pinot Noir Chehalem Mountain comes from the original vines Dick Erath planted in 1968 on the westernmost edge of the appellation, adjacent to Ribbon Ridge. It pours a medium ruby and is lifted with orange peel citrus, vibrant spiced cranberry, and iron-rich earth. Medium-bodied and energetic, with great tension and incredible energy, it delivers mouthwatering freshness of acidity, fine tannins, and loads of mineral texture. It‘s another very expressive and outstanding wine from the team at 00 Wines. Drink 2025-2040. 00 Wines, founded by husband-and-wife duo Katherine and Christopher Hermann, exclusively produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They derived the name “00” from numerology and say it represents true and absolute potential. Their first vintage was in 2015, and in 2017 they moved to a shared winemaking facility that they operate out of today. Katherine takes charge of the creative direction with packaging and communications. Her background in marketing brought her to New York City and Boulder, Colorado, working for technology startups, before arriving in the Willamette Valley. Prior to establishing 00 Wines, Christopher was a legal advisor for nearly 40 years for many of the top names in the wine and spirits industry, practicing environmental law. They are inspired by the great wines of Burgundy and implement many Burgundian techniques, advised by their consultant Pierre Millemann and their winemaker Wynne Peterson-Nerdry. Last year I was not able to taste their reds, but it proved to be well worth the wait. They display another level of purity and depth from truly exceptional sites. Also on the horizon for the 00 Wines team are two relatively new projects in both Burgundy and Champagne, which I will be able to share with our readers when I taste them in September of this year.
