Inky ruby. Heady, mineral-accented aromas of black raspberry and blueberry preserves and pungent flowers are accented by a spicy topnote. Red and dark berry liqueur flavors show excellent depth and vivacity thanks to a spine of zesty minerality and building spiciness. Finishes with impressively persistent dark berry and floral qualities, building tannins and excellent, mineral-driven persistence.

Another wine with some upside is the 2013 Côte Rôtie Viallière. This lieu-dit is located just underneath Les Grandes Places, lower down on the slope. It too has stunning purity and freshness in its notes of black currants, violets, coffee bean and wood smoke. Medium-bodied, fresh, lively and polished, it shows that slightly more mid-weight style of the vintage, yet is impeccably balanced and has a great finish. Like the Les Grandes Places, it’s 100% Syrah that spent two years in 15% new French oak prior to bottling. Drink it anytime over the coming 10-15 years.
Glass-staining ruby. Vibrant, mineral-accented black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by licorice and peppery spices. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering intense blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight with air. This powerful yet lively Côte-Rôtie finishes with excellent clarity and length, with chewy tannins making a late arrival.
