From a cooler, subtle north-facing parcel, the 2017 Chardonnay Hapgood offers layered notes of poached pear, white flowers, crushed tons, and citrus notes, resulting in an incredibly classy, layered, concentrated Chardonnay. With good acidity, perfect balance, and a great finish, it's another thrilling Chardonnay from Greg Brewer. This was another thrilling lineup from Greg Brewer, and I consistently rate these wines as some of the greatest in the Sta. Rita Hills, as well as all of Santa Barbara County. In addition to the latest releases, I was also able to taste retrospectives of his Chardonnay 3D and Pinot Noir Machado, which only reaffirmed my belief in the quality and age-worthiness of these wines. These are brilliant wines.

The 2017 Chardonnay Hapgood is ample and broad in the glass, with a real sense of phenolic intensity that gives the wine its overall shape. Tangerine, sage, mint, chamomile and dried flowers add aromatic nuance, but it is the wine's vertical feel that stands out most. The 2017 Hapgood is a superb Chardonnay endowed with tremendous character and sheer class.

The 2017 Chardonnay Hapgood begins with fresh pear and quince, opening to hazelnut, crushed shell and sweet hay with warm white peaches and white blossom hints. Light to medium-bodied with a lovely interplay of ripe fruits and mineral notions, it has seamless acidity and a very long, energetic, honey-nut finish. About 50 cases were made.
