This bottle of 1999 Ridge Syrah Lytton Estate was stunning and showed awesome ripe fruit to go along with a earthy, meaty streak that made this seem very northern Rhone'ish. Cassis, blackberry and roasted spice aromas are backed up by smoke, meat and subtle gamey notes on the nose. The palate matches the intensity of the nose and is medium to full bodied, ripe, lush and perfectly balanced. Subtle tannins show up on the long finish. An outstanding bottle of wine.

The 713-case cuvee of 1999 Syrah Lytton Estate is a blend of 92% Syrah, 7% Grenache, and 1% Viognier that tips the scales at a lofty, although well-hidden 14.8% alcohol. Pure, rich, deep, concentrated, and seamless, this medium to full-bodied, classic Syrah possesses floral and cassis aromas mixed with a hint of licorice.
