Youthful violet. Aromas of dried cherry, blackberry and licorice are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper. Taut and spicy on entry and then more open in the middle, offering gently sweet dark fruit flavors and a touch of bitter herbs. Shows good focus and cut on the finish, which features dusty tannins and a subtle touch of cherry pit.

The 2014 Juliénas (Domaine des Mouilles) was picked at 50 hectoliters per hectare, 50% de-stemmed and matured in stainless steel vats. It has a slightly muddled nose, to be frank, which is a shame after the commendable Beaujolais Villages. The palate is simple, a little tannic, with a short finish that is calling out for more flesh.
