Score 93/100 · Drink 2010-2022, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2010

Fresh and pure, the 2007 Baker Lane Syrah Estate Vineyard shows more fruit than the ’06 with captivating aromatics of raspberry and blackberry fruit, copious crushed stone and minerals, spice and subtle peppered meat notes. The aromatics are top rate and the palate doesn’t lose a beat. Medium to full bodied, there’s beautifully ripe fruit, amazing focus, fresh acidity and a long finish that highlights a fair dose of ripe tannin. Drink over the following 10 to 12 years.

The 2007 Syrah Estate exhibits denser color, sweeter fruit, more velvety tannin, and lots more black fruits intermixed with flowers and earth. Both wines, however, seem to be near-term drinking propositions over the next 3-4 years. Tel. (510) 845-0693; Fax (510) 845-0689

Lurid purple color. Deep, mineral-driven aromas of blackcurrant, incense, minerals and pipe tobacco. Lithe, light-bodied dark berry flavors stain the palate, with zesty mineral and floral qualities providing energy. This has the weight and texture of a pinot, but the flavors are deep, broad and powerful. The floral and mineral notes build with air and extend through the sweet, sappy finish. In the context of Old World syrah, this would be Cote-Rotie, and an awfully good one.
