Tasting notes
Also from Yamhill-Carlton, the 2022 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard pours a shade deeper ruby color and is smoky and spiced with ripe cherries, incense, nutmeg, and toasted pine. It saturates the palate with a medium-bodied frame, ripe tannins, mouthwatering salinity, and a long-lasting finish. It's a strong offering from the Shea Vineyard and will be worth revisiting over the next 12-15 years. Now in their tenth vintage, 00 Wines has expanded to an annual production of 5,000 cases in Oregon and includes their wines from both Burgundy and Champagne, which are featured in this report. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Katherine and Christopher Hermann, they exclusively produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They derived the name “00” from numerology and say it represents true and absolute potential. Their first vintage was in 2015, and in 2017, they relocated to a shared winemaking facility that they currently operate out of. Katherine takes charge of the creative direction with packaging and communications. Her background in marketing led her to New York City and Boulder, Colorado, where she worked for technology startups before arriving in the Willamette Valley. Before establishing 00 Wines, Christopher served as a legal advisor for nearly 40 years to many of the top names in the wine and spirits industry, specializing in environmental law. They are inspired by the great wines of Burgundy and implement many Burgundian techniques, guided by their consultant, Pierre Millemann, and their winemaker, Wynne Peterson-Nerdry.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Shea is bursting with complex woodsy, musky, spicy perfume that complements a core of wild cherry and cranberry and lures you back to the glass again and again. The medium-bodied palate features pure, concentrated, crunchy flavors. It’s structured by silky tannins and juicy acidity and has a long, spicy finish.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Shea lifts from the glass with a sweetly spiced and floral mix of dried strawberries, rose petals and cloves. Its round textures and supple personality soothe as ripe cherry-berry fruits settle on the palate, with a core of juicy acidity to balance. The 2022 leaves the palate stained in primary concentration through the sapid and long finale, as velvety lavender and liquid stone mask its fine tannins. A tinge of sour citrus offers contrast. This is beautifully balanced yet still has a lot more to say, which only maturity will unlock.
