Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2013

The 2011 Mixed Blacks is another pedigreed wine from Edge Hill that is just bursting with class. Wild cherries, tobacco, menthol, cloves, new leather and flowers meld together in a juicy, expressive wine full of personality. The 2011 drinks beautifully today. It has both the depth and pedigree to develop in bottle for a decade, perhaps more. The field blend is approximately 67% Zinfandel, 15% Carignane, 8% Mourvedre, 5% Grenache and 5% Alicante Bouschet.

Normally the field blend of Zinfandel, Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan and Alicante Bouchet is nearly overwhelmingly rich, tannic and intense, but the more charming, lighter-styled 2011 Edge Hill Mixed Blacks is a supple, soft, easygoing effort with plenty of meaty charcuterie notes intermixed with pepper, blackberry and black cherry notes. Inky/ruby-colored, full-bodied and supple, this alluring red can be enjoyed over the next decade. Tel. (707) 944-8577
