Orange blossom, elder flower, basil and mint are accompanied on a nose of almost spirituously high-toned intensity by intimations of the rhubarb and fresh lime that subsequently lend animating tartness, juiciness and tingle on a polished palate. The finish shakes up the mouth with its zesty grip, stony impingements and tart tang. The sense of finesse and clarity found in the corresponding Hochäcker or the intriguing mineral impingement of the Piri are missing, but this is still an extremely impressive member of a collection that will be fascinating to follow from bottle.

Screwcap. Close to the River Krems. Deep, ripe fruit, more clementine than lemon and lightly floral. Dry and chalky on the palate, really elegant in its fresh purity. Long too. Lovely, so pure and tense as well as fruity, then that pretty scent comes back on the finish. (JH)
Made by Martin Nigl Junior and tasted as a sample in July 2017, the 2016 Ried Pellingen 1ÖTW Riesling Privat opens with a pure and crystalline nose with classic, bright Riesling and citrus fruit aromas. Full-bodied, dense and elegant on the palate, this is a round and intense dry Riesling from the Pellingen, a south to southwest-facing vineyard in Senftenberg with mica schist soils. The 2016 is powerful and promising and reveals firm structure and an intense, persistent finish.
