Score 93-95/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018
Deep red; more saturated than the Clos Saint-Denis. Deeply pitched aromas of game and smoke show a wild touch of reduction. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, this seriously backward wine has the concentration and thickness of a top 2015. Very rich but classically dry, this slightly medicinal, even austere Clos de la Roche will need long aging to fully express itself. In fact, Magnien had the wine in a cement tank at the time of my tasting and did not expect to bottle it until May. Finishes with substantial granular tannins and superb length.
