Score 88/100 · Drink 2000-2004, Robert Parker, Jun 2000

The 1998 Pinot Noir (3,400 cases) is an attractive, medium ruby-colored offering with a spicy, cinnamon, root beer and plum/raspberry-scented nose. This lush, elegant, tasty Pinot offers savory, fleshy flavors exhibiting a judicious touch of oak, and well-integrated soft tannin and acidity. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Tel. (707) 257-5300

Good dark red. Complex aromas of smoky raspberry, cassis, black cherry, minerals and earth. Lovely concentration and purity of raspberry flavor; offers sappy freshness and a silky texture. Finishes long and subtle, with light, dusty tannins. Still quite young. This seems superior to the '97 release. The crop level was low in '98 and the berries were small, notes Soter, who added that there were more problems with heat in both '96 and '99.
