Saturated ruby. Ripe blackberry, cherry cola, candied violet and woodsmoke aromas show very good clarity and depth. Fleshy, palate-coating black and blue fruit flavors pick up smoke, olive and floral pastille qualities with air, along with a hint of black pepper. Finishes smooth, sweet and long; chewy tannins add grip to the wine's lush finishing dark fruit.

More classic, focused and edgy, the 2012 Cornas Empreintes has bright acidity in its medium to full-bodied flavors of smoked herbs, beef blood, licorice and assorted dark fruits. The largest production cuvee, give it 2-3 years and drink it through 2022.

A slightly animal tang to the nose, as with their other Cornas. Soft, almost jammy black fruit and firm but rounded tannins. Bright, crisp finish. Just a little simple. (RH)
