Score 16.5/20 · Drink 2015-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Dec 2017

The increase in heat, as well as higher yields from the vintage, pushed the wine back to a riper style – Josh Bergstrom explains it was difficult to pick fast enough to stay ahead of the ripeness so that weather dictated style to a large degree. Even so, the vintage had quite low pH and an impression of acidity so that it offers a sense of freshness within riper flavours. The weather having such a clear impact on style in 2009 also made him more determined to pull back the style from then on into future vintages. Darker richer aromatics showing notes of cooked herbs and wet tobacco. A richer palate with more fruit matter density through the mid palate and notes of spiced chocolate liqueur still accented by herbal notes and even dried roses. Sweet black and purple fruits carry through the mid palate and lead to a cracked-pepper accent on the close. Slightly chewy tannins, still pairs to balanced acidity. A bit of cigar through the finish. (ECB)

The 2009 Pinot Noir De Lancellotti displays the finest aromatics among the Bergstrom wines. Exotic spices, underbrush, sandalwood, rose petal, and a mix of red and black fruits are followed by a forward, elegant, spicy wine with plenty of depth and excellent length. It offers a drinking window extending through 2019. Josh Bergstrom now has 5 estate vineyards encompassing 85 acres in 5 AVAs. He has decided to stop working with Riesling (despite the high quality) and focus entirely on Chardonnay in his white wine program. Tel. (503) 554-0463; www.bergstromwinery.com
