The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva boasts a classic display of dried cherries, strawberries, dusty autumnal spice, leather and smoke. Its textures are soft and pliant, contrasting citrus-tinged red fruits and rich brown spices with slow-mounting tannins that add tension toward the finale. This balances savory and sweet with salty minerals. It is still youthfully structured with only a hint of dark earthy mineral tones to show its age. The 2001 Riserva is quite charming, sitting just short of its perfect drinking window, and it’s geared to win a lot of hearts. Sampled from the winery cellar.

Il Palazzone's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is an outstanding effort. Full-bodied and intense, it presents an exciting array of sweet dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice and toasted oak, with notable persistence and an engaging, generous personality. The sweetness carries through to the finish, where an inviting note of freshness rounds out the close.

Very dark. Heady compost aromas then quite thick and sweet. Quite marked acidity and fine tannins. A solid, quite meaty wine without being one of the most subtle. A slightly messy finish. (JR)
