Score 95/100 · Drink 2006-2014, Robert Parker, Dec 2006

One of my favorite Central Coast sites is the Santa Barbara vineyard in the Alisos Canyon known as the Thompson Vineyard and made famous by Ojai’s Adam Tolmach. Fermented with 65% whole clusters, the 2004 Syrah Thompson Vineyard (125 cases produced) offers a dense purple color as well as beautiful aromas of chocolate, ground pepper, blackberries, flowers, and road tar. It is an intense yet impressively well-balanced Syrah that should drink well for 7-8 years. Previously recommended: 2004 Saisons des Vins Syrah l’Hiver (90), 2004 Syrah Broken Leg Vineyard (94), 2004 Syrah Cailloux & Coccinelle (95+), 2003 Syrah Eaglepoint Ranch (92), 2003 Syrah Garys’ Vineyard (91), 2003 Syrah Hawk’s Butte (95+), 2003 Syrah James Berry Vineyard (96). Saturated deep ruby. Tight but pure aromas of crushed blackberry; a bit mute today. Then dense and sweet on the palate, conveying an impression of considerable concentration and power but not yet revealing its personality. But this impressively sweet fruit bomb of a syrah showed an intriguing minerality with extended aeration. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.
