The 2010 Mernet Reserve, an equal part blend of Estate Merlot, Carneros Merlot, Estate Cabernet Franc and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, offers up scents of cedarwood, underbrush, forest floor, black currants, sweet kirsch and cola. The complex, evolved aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied wine with beautiful fruit purity, an attractive texture, and a long finish. Consume this superb, complex 2010 over the next 10-15 years. Micheal Keenan has done an incredible job at this Spring Mountain winery over the last 10-15 years, producing one of the finest Cabernet Francs in all of northern California as well as hitting all cylinders with his other Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as his sumptuous blend called Mernet. (50% merlot and 25% each cabernets sauvignon and franc): Bright, dark red. Expressive aromas and flavors of currant, plum, mocha, tobacco, sassafras and earth, accented by fresh herbs and menthol. Offers more life and definition than the 2010 merlot offering--more personality. Finishes with a firm dusting of tannins and good spicy lift to the flavors of plum, currant and leather.
The 2010 Red Blend Mernet Reserve is a bit of a hodgepodge blend of Spring Mountain Merlot, Carneros Merlot plus Spring Mountain Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has plenty of depth, but less in the way of character or true excitement.
