Score 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2005

Dark red, but without the ruby tones of the Estate bottling. Aromas of redcurrant, chocolate and loam, with a minty nuance but less pinot sap than the Estate. Sweet, soft, broad and nicely concentrated, with flavors of redcurrant, plum, smoke and earth. Fuller in the middle than the Estate, but a bit heavier than that wine. Finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins.

The 2002 Pinot Noir Octagon is a small cuvee (around 200 cases) with about 10% stems, and a high percentage of new oak in its upbringing (about 40%). Deep ruby in color to the rim, with a sweet nose of framboise, red apples, sweet cherries, and a hint of darker fruits, this medium to full-bodied wine has a dense ruby/purple-tinged color to the rim and more substance and meat on the palate. It is bigger styled and also probably not as charming and forward as the two previous cuvees. Anticipated maturity: now-2013. Tel. (707) 823-2378; Fax (707) 823-0918
