Dried apricot, wild herbs, mineral salts and lemon oil on the alluring nose. The brothy peach pit flavor is cut clean by pungent mineral-driven acidity. Austere but dense and impressive on the finish, offering excellent potential. A very good example of the clearly delineated style of dry Riesling I like to drink from one of my favorite sites of the Mittelhaardt.

von Winnings 2013 Forster Pechstein Riesling trocken GG is one of the stars of the vintage. Pale, though bright citrus colored it is superbly clear on the nose, very mineral and herbal with some oak and yeasty notes alongside precise peach/nectarine aromas. This well-balanced, very gentle and pure wine shows bright and intense on the palate, the pure mineral and ripe fruits are building one in one unit towards the quite juicy finish. Always fine and stylish, this is a very well-balanced, full-bodied, very elegant, salty and persistent wine.

Mandarin and apricot, but no, it’s not Viognier but winemaker Attmann’s barrique signature. There is far more to the Pechstein than just oak, however, as it exhibits an amazingly aromatic fragrance reminiscent of blackcurrant bud. With two such diametrically opposed influences it is obvious that they will take some time to merge into a harmonious partnership, but the sheer substance of this Grosses Gewächs promises a happy union. Despite the refreshing acidity this will never be traditional Riesling, but ‘de gustibus non est disputandum’. (MS)
