Tasting notes
The 2004 Zinfandel Von Weidlich’s deep ruby color is followed by a big, briery, peppery, herbal-scented bouquet, and lovely, full-bodied, sweet strawberry and black cherry, spice, and incense-like flavors. Consume it over the next 4-5 years. Previously recommended: 2003 Pinot Noir La Neblina (88), 2003 Pinot Noir Savoy (87), 2003 Syrah Timbervine (90+), 2003 Zinfandel Von Weidlich (90). Tel. Good bright deep ruby. Slightly reduced aromas of raw crushed berries and mocha, with a faintly porty quality. Then creamy-sweet and thick but penetrating, with sound acids giving shape and lift to the blackberry and boysenberry flavors. Very primary zinfandel that should merit a higher score with a bit of patience. Today this seems almost restrained in the context of California zinfandel. Sussman recommends drinking this within four or five years.
