Tasting notes
The 2005 Zinfandel Von Weidlich reveals that even a brilliant winemaker can have challenges. It is a good Zinfandel but displays high acidity, a lighter style than one might expect from Zinfandel, and some superficial briery, peppery herbal notes in the aromas and favors. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. Previously recommended: 2004 Pinot Noir Alberigi (89+), 2004 Pinot Noir La Neblina (88), 2004 Pinot Noir Savoy (91), 2004 Pinot Noir Terra Neuma (90), 2004 Syrah Cherry Camp (93+), 2004 Syrah Timbervine (95), 2004 Zinfandel Von Weidlich (90). Dark purple. Powerful blackberry, raspberry and smoked meat aromas show great punch. Broad and sweet but held in check by gentle acidity and fine, dusty tannins. A juicy, vibrant example of zin, with outstanding depth and precision on the lengthy finish.
