63% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 11% Syrah, 8% Counoise, 6% Tannat. Pale ruby in colour. Red-fruited on the nose with cherry and red plum giving way to dried fig, rose petals and baked walnuts. Plenty of mouth-watering acidity and fine sandy tannin. Lengthy finish. (SCJ)

The most mid-weight and straightforward vintage of this cuvee I’ve tasted, the 2012 En Gobelet has notions of blackberry, crushed rocks, spring flowers and licorice in its medium-bodied, fresh and lively profile. Made from 63% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre, 11% Syrah, 8% Counoise and 6% Tannat, it has solid tannic grip on the finish, but it needs more depth and richness. This was an enjoyable tasting with Jason Haas and winemaker Neal Collins. Looking at the 2012s, this was an above-average crop, and it shows in the wines, with most possessing lighter colors and more mid-weight depth and textures. While there’s plenty to like here, it is not my favorite vintage from this estate and I hope it’s a result of the vintage and not a stylistic change. The 2013s are better, but still lack the depth and richness of a top year. Looking at the 2012 reds, these come across as lighter weight, streamlined and forward efforts that lack depth and richness. Given the quality that’s present in the vintage as a whole, these are a disappointment. Starting off the 2013s, all of which were tasted out of barrel, these appear to be a step up from the ‘12s, yet still show mostly mid-weight depth and richness. Tel. The 2012 En Gobelet wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and richness. Plum, tobacco, menthol, new leather and spice notes flesh out in a rich, enveloping wine endowed with tons of depth and nuance. The 2012 stands out for its pure resonance. A hint of crushed flowers adds nuance on the finish.
