As always, the 2017 Malvasia Bianca Boogie Nights Larner Vineyard (brought up mostly in concrete) is about as crazily perfumed as wine gets. Exotic peach, apricot, tangerine, orange blossom, honeyed lime, and soapy notes all give way to a fresh, juicy, racy wine that would be a terrific aperitif or meal starter. I continue to be blown away by the wines of Paul Lato, and these are unquestionably some of the most profound and exciting wines coming from the Central Coast today. The lineup has grown substantially over the past decade, and Lato now releases upwards of five Chardonnays, six Pinot Noirs, two Grenaches, three Syrahs, a Sauvignon Blanc, and a Malvasia. Despite the number of wines, quality hasn’t slipped an inch, and the wines show incredible site and varietal typicity always paired with sensational fruit and balance. The 2017 Malvasia Bianca Boogie Nights, from Larner, offers terrific varietal character and tons of personality. Exotic white flowers, mint, green apple and ripe pear shape this super-expressive, inviting aromatic white from Paul Lato.
The 2017 Malvasia Bianca Boogie Nights Larner Vineyard, introduced by Paul Lato as "my little silly Malvasia" sure is full of personality, giving up elderflower, lychee, gobs of warm white peach, petrichor, lime zest, musk melon and white pepper and spicy accents. The light to medium-bodied palate is fully dry, purely fruited and wonderfully perfumed, with juicy acidity and a long, textured finish. Lovely! The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented in concrete eggs and neutral barrels, retaining the fine lees after racking and aged for seven months in 75% concrete and 25% neutral oak. "I call the movement inside the egg tai chi," Lato says. "It's a slow, soft movement. The same wine in barrel would be clear, but in the egg, the fine lees are in suspension. It creates a beautiful texture and adds flavor." 100 cases produced.
