The 2014 Hat Trick, 50% Marsanne, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Roussanne blend, is bold, luscious and richly textured. White orchard fruit, mint and floral notes all open up, but it is the wine's oily, waxy texture that gives weight and intensity. This is another distinctive wine from Sanguis and proprietor Matthias Pippig.

Composed of 50% Marsanne, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Roussanne, the 2014 The Hat Trick has a fragrant nose of honeyed lemons, orange blossoms, allspice and baker’s yeast with touches of beeswax and fresh straw. The medium-bodied palate has an opulent oiliness to the texture and lovely savory flavors, finishing long with a mineral suggestion. Drinking nicely now, it should age beautifully over the next five to six years.

Made from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne that saw extensive lees stirring and 24 months in mostly neutral French oak (there was 20% in stainless-steel), the 2014 The Hat Trick offers a sweet, exotic bouquet of orange rind, green citrus and exotic flowers, with an almost Muscat/Viognier-like (yet not sweet) character. Dry and classically styled on the palate, with good extract and plenty of acidity, it's a singular white that should be versatile with tapas or to start a meal. Based out of Santa Barbara, Sanguis’s Matthias Pippig continues to make a singular lineup of wines that run the gamut from rich, unctuous Syrahs, to old-school Pinot Noirs, to borderline orange wines. There’s some true gems in the lineup, with the 2014 1/1 Syrah being the best wine I’ve tasted from the estate.
