Tasting notes
Carter's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy comes from a parcel planted to Clone 4. The unique aromas include floral hints and whiffs of licorice, plus To Kalon's hallmark black cherries and loam. The vintage treated this block well, yielding a ripe, full-bodied wine that seems bigger, richer, longer and more concentrated than some of Carter's other 2019 bottlings.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is rich, powerful and explosive, with soaring aromatics and plenty of the vertical structure that is such a signature of this site. Dark blue/purplish fruit, rose petal, sage, lavender and spice build beautifully over time. I especially admire the aromatic intensity and vibrancy here. The Grand Daddy is a fabulous wine from Mark Carter and winemaker Mike Smith.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is just about as good as it gets, delivering a full-bodied, deep, rich, powerful style. Plenty of kirsch and ripe currant and blackberry fruits as well as textbook Oakville iron, black olive, and tobacco emerge on the nose, and it has a seamless mouthfeel, plenty of building tannins, and a heavenly finish. This pure, all-American, hedonistic yet balanced beauty could come from nowhere else. It has another 20-25 years of longevity.
