Score 92/100 · James Suckling, Dec 2020

Abundant blackcurrant and raw-cocoa aromas with dried currant, tobacco leaf and crushed walnut, too. It’s medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins. Gently bitter currant, berry and citrus-peel notes. Fresh and pleasant. Better from 2022.

The 2017 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, rich and super-expressive, all while retaining the classic sense of mid-weight structure that is typical of the Round Pond Cabernets. Hints of tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and leather add aromatic nuance to a core of sweet red-toned fruit. There is a bit of edginess to the tannin, but then again, that is 2017. All things considered, this is a fine effort for the year. Sadly, production is down about 50%.
