Score 90/100 · Drink 2014-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2014

Carlisle's 2011 Red Wine Two Acres graces the palate with exquisite freshness and silkiness. This is a fairly restrained, bright vintage for the Two Acres, with plenty of expressive, high-toned floral notes and lifted red-toned fruit. The wine's mid-weight structure argues for near and medium-term drinking. In 2011, the Two Acres is all about balance and harmony. The Two Acres is typically a blend of several grapes, but in 2011 the difficult weather conditions claimed the Carignane, Alicante, Petite Sirah and Peloursin, so the blend is predominantly Mourvèdre with just a dollop (2%) of Syrah.

(made only from old vines mourvedre and syrah this vintage, as all of the other varieties planted in this vineyard either failed to ripen or rotted; 12.5% alcohol): Bright ruby. Spicy red berries and cherry on the nose, with lively mineral and floral notes adding vivacity. Lithe and precise on the palate, offering smoke-accented black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that take on weight with air. Finishes brisk and clean, with late-arriving tannins and an echo of peppery spices.
