Much better, the 2010 Syrah Goldridge is more layered and richer with blacker fruits and a fuller, riper, more intense style. Consume it over the next 5-7 years. The ever reliable Tom Dehlinger continues to turn out realistically priced wines of exceptionally high quality. Their newest offerings, the Altamont Pinot Noir and Syrah, come from a hilltop vineyards planted in gravelly red soils previously called “Estate.” The Frei Road Syrah emanates from a 2.5-acre block of what was the Martinelli-owned Zio Tony Ranch. Dehlinger has never been one to utilize a tremendous amount of new oak for their Chardonnay program, and both the 2010 and 2011 Estate Chardonnays reflect that. Tel. (707) 823-2378

The 2010 Syrah Goldridge is drop-dead gorgeous. Juicy black cherries, flowers, mint, licorice and mocha all jump from the glass. There is a purity to the fruit in the 2010 that stands out. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the next few years. Still, it is impossible not to love the 2010 today. Varietal notes abound, including hints of savory herbs, crushed rocks and white flowers. The 2010 is fabulous juice.

Inky purple. Expressive, highly perfumed aromas of blackberry, woodsmoke, bacon fat and cracked pepper. Deeply flavored but light on its feet, with penetrating flavors of dark berry preserve and floral pastille. Very syrah, with a pinot-like delicacy and precision. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lingering smoke and floral notes. Fans of graceful northern Rhone wines should give this one a try.
