Score 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

Bright ruby-blue color. Lively, highly aromatic nose of blueberry, strawberry, smoked meat and spicy oak; quite pinot-like. Then dense and sappy but a bit youthfully clenched, with its new oak element showing. This offers strong red and black fruit flavors and an inviting spicy sweetness. A bit richer than the Phoenix Ranch syrah, but not quite as obviously syrah-like in its aromas and flavors.

Score 90-91/100 · Drink 2003-2011, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

This estate’s finest Syrah to date is the 2002 Syrah Estate. Sadly, only 75 cases were produced. Revealing smoky, blackberry, melted road tar, and floral characteristics, it is a full-bodied, fleshy effort possessing outstanding purity as well as presence. It will drink well young, yet age for 7-8 years. To date, Failla’s Syrahs have been lean and lacking texture, but Ehren Jordan has been working primarily with very young vines, so it is somewhat unfair to make definitive assessments.
