Olivier Humbrecht crafted the 2000 Riesling Brand Vendanges Tardives exclusively from his parcel in the south by southeast-facing, black mica-dominated Steinglitz (this name means shiny rock in the Alsatian dialect) sector of the vineyard. This full-bodied wine explodes from the glass with lilies, peaches, apricots, and a myriad of spices. Unbelievably sexy, it is thick, dense, and botrytis-laced. Its exotic, apricot puree-flavored character has extraordinary balance and an interminable finish. Wow! Projected maturity: 2007-2025. Olivier Humbrecht describes 2000 as "a year of excellent ripeness where the key to success was sorting out the bad rot prior to harvesting." To accomplish this, Humbrecht sent out teams to go through every parcel, dropping whatever bunches had been infected with sour rot. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's harvest lasted 6 weeks, with one-fourth being accomplished between September 19 and October 5th, and the remaining three-fourths picked by October 31st. Subtle mineral and pepper aromas call to mind a great Austrian gruner veltliner from granite. Thick and sweet but with great verve; at once unctuous and structured. Thoroughly ripe, expressive fruit shows great palate-staining persistence. 12.5% alcohol and 90 g/l r.s.
