Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2017-2024, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques offers up pretty layers of sweet, candied fruit on a mid-weight, persistent frame. This is another attractive, open and approachable 2009 from Rousseau. A delicate, understated finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2024. I tasted the following wines with Frederic Robert, who works alongside Eric Rousseau. In 2009 Rousseau and his team began picking on September 7, the earliest in Gevrey. For the first time the estate used 20% whole clusters on all the wines except for Clos de la Roche, which was closer to 15%. The 2009s were scheduled to be bottled in April 2011. I also tasted a handful of 2008s that were deeply impressive. Importer: Frederic Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel. (212) 355-0700

Medium red. Pure, fruity aromas of red berries and flowers. Integrated acidity gives a tangy character and lovely aromatic lift to the juicy red fruit and spice flavors. Not the last word in complexity but offers lovely perfume and precision. A very good year for this cold terroir, notes Rousseau.

Pretty light in body with enough acid and quite a charge of tannin – delicate. Very relaxed ethereal wine though without the density that has once stunned. Competent rather than thrilling though there is very good tension. (JR)
