Score 91/100 · Drink 2018-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Mar 2017

A new wine in this range, the 2014 Zinfandel Bedrock is a dark, brooding, Zinfandel-based field blend. Even with all of its richness, the 2014 possesses good aromatic presence and nuance throughout. Cedar, tobacco, licorice and herbs all develop in the glass, while a closing burst of acidity perks up the finish. Overall, this is a fairly restrained wine from a site that tends to yield more deep, powerful reds.

The 2014 Zinfandel Bedrock comes from the vineyard owned by Morgan Twain-Peterson and is Limerick Lane’s only non-estate wine. This is old-vine material, over 100 years in age, and dominated by Zinfandel, although there are a number of other dark varieties involved in this parcel. Again aged 18 months in neutral oak, the wine tips the scales at 14.8% alcohol. It is an expansive, dense, purple-colored wine with briary, blueberry and black raspberry fruit as well as some underbrush and loamy soil nuances, plenty of spice, and a full-bodied, opulent mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
