(made with 25% whole clusters and fruit from the Bien Nacido vineyard; 20% new French oak): Dark purple. Expansive aromas of blackberry, cassis, star anise, minerals and violet, with a smoky overtone. Stains the palate with black and blue fruit compote flavors, picking up a sexy floral pastille quality with air. Deep and powerful but surprisingly graceful, offering a complex melange of dark fruit, floral pastille and spice elements that linger through a long, subtly tannic finish.

A more long term prospect, the 2011 Syrah Bossman (100% Syrah) comes all from Bien Nacido and spent 28 months in 15% new oak. Showing classic Santa Barbara County Syrah notes of dark fruits, exotic pepper, smoked herbs and hints of leather, it flows onto the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture and fine tannin. Give it a year or two and enjoy bottles through 2023. My tasting with Matthias Pippig was a big one, and the lineup is loaded with outstanding wines. Tel. (805) 845-0920; www.sanguiswine.com
