Brilliant ruby. Ripe, smoke-accented red berries, licorice and violet on the nose and in the mouth. Smoky and focused on the palate, with emerging spice and game elements. Gentle tannins come in late, adding grip to a long, smoke- and spice-tinged finish. A bit of aeration makes this old-school wine drink quite nicely right now.

Syrah/Viognier, 24 months in French oak barrique. Gneiss and mica-based schist. Paler than most. Rather reduced. But there's a certain authenticity to this. Or do I mean that this is how Côte Rôtie used to taste? A tad skinny. Fast fade. For early drinking. (JR)
