The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Patriarch is a new wine from Rich Frank. Sweet, voluptuous and opulent in style, the 2012 offers plenty of depth, but not quite the finesse or persistence of the best wines here. Super-ripe black cherries, plums, cloves, violets and new leather add nuance, but in the end, the Patriarch comes across as a bit overdone. Frank used to make Promise in partnership with Steve McPherson and Patriarch looks to be cut from the same cloth stylistically, but it doesn't have that wine's suave, silky texture and overall feel.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Patriarch is the soaring superstar of the vintage. Blueberry, incense, graphite and blackberry notes that are incredibly precise and intense jump from the glass of this inky/purple wine. It is full-bodied, opulent and has a broad, savory mouthfeel. This is outrageous Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink over the next two decades.
