Score 92/100 · Drink 2019-2027, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Jan 2020

Made of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Malbec, the deep garnet colored 2009 J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has a fragrant nose of baked black cherries, black raspberries, plum preserves and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of new leather, pencil shavings, unsmoked cigars and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegant and softly spoken with a light chew of tannins and just enough freshness, finishing earthy.

Moderately saturated medium ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry convey a slightly roasted porty quality. In a rather plush, soft style, showing a slightly cooked dark berry element and a touch of sweetness. The tongue-dusting tannins turn increasingly dry on the back end, clashing with the wine's fruit. A wine of modest complexity, and for drinking soon.

Although restrained, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Malbec, exhibits wonderful flowery notes along with an elegant, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, sweet red and black currant and loamy, dusty, earthy notes intermixed with a hint of roasted herbs, and a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. It should drink nicely for another 10-12 years. These Cabernet Sauvignons are made by J. Davies, the proprietor of Schramsberg. Tel. (707) 942-6668

(blended with 19% malbec): Good dark red. Aromas of spicy plum, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco, licorice and mint. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering moderate complexity but good inner-mouth intensity and lift to the plum and currant flavors. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and good depth. Better than a bottle I tried a year ago, as the wine's finish is showing less alcoholic warmth today.
