Score 93/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

The 2021 Pinot Noir Hapgood is expressive and detailed. The nose opens with ringing tones of tangerine and pomegranate, plus nuances of tobacco leaves, mossy bark and dark spices. The light-bodied palate has a silky texture and softly tangy acidity that adds a shimmery quality to its core of spicy fruit, ending with an ethereal finish. It will benefit from 2-3+ years in bottle.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Hapgood is a powerful wine, but it is also the Pinot in this range with the most pronounced stem character. Blue fruit, sage, leather, spice and dried flowers fill out the layers. The cold personality of this site and the year are very much in evidence. The Hapgood is a wine with a very strong personality.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Hapgood is closer in style to the 3D with its savory, spicy, almost meaty, gamey profile. Redcurrants, mulled raspberries, baking spices, hazelnuts, and dried herbs/forest floor, as well as some classic Sta. Rita Hills marine notes, define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered, expansive texture, bright yet integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. Drink this complex, insanely good Pinot Noir any time over the coming 10-12 years. As usual with Greg’s wines, these wines are not destemmed and are brought up all in neutral barrels. Most of the Chardonnays check in around 14% alcohol, with the Pinot Noirs between 14%-14.5%, and they all have singular characters as well as a decade of longevity at a minimum. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better lineup of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from anyone in California.
