A deep, inky wine, the 2010 Petite Sirah Kick Ranch bursts from the glass with blackberry jam, cassis, wild flowers, mint and cracked pepper. This intense, full-throttle wine, the 2010 Kick Ranch is a wild, no-holds-barred offering. Another year or two in bottle should help the wine come together a little more fully. Today, the 2010 is quite raw and intense. The huge, voluptuous finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste, but ideally the 2010 is best left alone for another year or two. With a little time in the glass, the 2010 comes together more fully, so if readers can't resist the urge to drink the 2010 early, the wine needs air. The 2010 is 96% Petite Sirah and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.

(blended with 5% cabernet sauvignon): Saturated bright ruby. Urgent aromas of crushed blackberry, blueberry, licorice and mocha accented by black pepper. Sweet, lush and pliant, with a captivating creaminess to its dark berry and dark chocolate flavors. Les Behrens noted that this vineyard used to be planted to cabernet but that the vines were rebudded over to petite sirah in 2001 and 2002. He still adds a bit of cabernet sauvignon to give focus and structure to the petite sirah. Finishes with substantial, building ripe tannins that coat the entire palate and teeth. Just a tad brutish today but the wine boasts terrific fruit intensity and should develop in bottle for a decade or two.
