New owner Silvio Denz reduced the quantities produced even more than the original owner, and the result is an outstanding as well as reasonably-priced 2004 Faugeres. A blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it boasts a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of graphite, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and smoke. Medium to full body, dense fruit, sweet tannin, and mouthfilling texture and length suggest this beauty will drink well for 12-15 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage.

Medium-deep ruby-red. Ripe aromas of black fruits, violet and licorice, with some minty high tones. Sweet and firmly built if not especially complex. Dominant flavor of kirsch Finishes firmly tannic, fresh and persistent.

Very odd, charred note on the nose, then syrupy texture – very atypical for the vintage. Where did all the tannins go? A sort of cough syrup rather than a wine. Very odd. [This property and its stablemates have just been sold to Silvio Denz, the Swiss owner of the Catalan winery Clos d’Agon where Peter Sisseck of Pingus makes rather interesting Rhône-ish whites.] (JR)
