The 2005 Ojai Syrah Melville Vineyard is still very primary and needs a good decant to really shine. Slightly raw and disjointed on the first night, this was beautiful on the second day, showing pure aromatics of cassis and blackberry liqueur, dried coffee, pepper, underbrush and plenty of earthy, mineral like notes. It’s actually a fairly large scaled wine but it pulls it off in style. Medium to full bodied with beautiful purity of fruit, fresh, clean acidity and a light, classy texture that carries the finish, this outstanding wine should be left alone for another 3 to 5 years and then consumed over the following decade.

Vivid ruby. Highly perfumed bouquet of blackberry, potpourri, smoky minerals and incense. Vibrant red and dark berry flavors gain depth and sweetness with air, picking up an exotic candied floral quality. The mineral element resonates strongly on the strikingly pure and focused finish. This is pretty sexy right now but possesses the balance to reward patience.

Slightly leaner and more austere, the 2005 Syrah Melville Vineyard exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with an elegant, medium-bodied, finesse-styled personality. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Tel. (805) 649-1674

Ruby-red. Wildly aromatic nose offers a gaudy array of red and dark berry fruit, smoked meat, dried and fresh flowers and peppery spices. Impressively precise raspberry and blueberry flavors are deep and sweet but lively too, with firm but harmonious tannins adding grip. Finishes sweet and impressively long, leaving an exotic floral pastille quality behind.
