Tasting notes
Dark crimson. Discernible leathery Syrah. Dry finish. Some interim tertiary minerally Syrah aromas – sort of warmish Côte Rôtie? Can’t see it going much more complex. (JR)

(100% whole clusters and a high pH of 3.87 for a Wind Gap wine) Glass-staining purple. Cherry-cola, blackberry and oak spices on the nose, with pipe tobacco and licorice nuances adding complexity. Supple, candied dark berry flavors coat the palate and pick up smoke, violet and licorice qualities with air. Plenty of impressively deep, sappy dark berry fruit here; this is the richest and densest of this set of syrahs.
The 2007 Wind Gap Wines Syrah Castelli-Knight Vineyard offers loads of peppery dark fruits, charcoal, tobacco and a touch of bacon. With air, serious underlying minerality comes out, giving the wine a more serious, edgy feel. It’s medium+ bodied and shows a precise, focused texture, fantastic balance, and a tannic, long finish. I’m a fan and this should drink beautifully over the next 12 to 15 years.
The stunning, inky/purple-hued 2007 Syrah Castelli Knight Ranch offers up notes of bouquet garni, roasted meats, pepper steak, blackberries, and cassis. Made from 100% Syrah (with 100% whole clusters), and aged 22 months in French oak (30% new), it possesses superb concentration, richness, texture, and length. It should drink well for 10-12+ years.
