Tasting notes
The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru has just a tinge of boot polish on the nose, though I appreciate the delineation and fruit profile. Aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, incense and dried iris flower linger. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This is quite pliant and fleshy, though like a couple of other Echézeaux, the oak feels just a bit top-heavy on the finish. However, I believe it will integrate with time. Patience is required, because as it opens, the energy at its core becomes undeniable. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Wafting from the glass with notes of sweet berry fruit, burning embers, plums, loamy soil, exotic spices and creamy new oak, Liger-Belair's 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a layered core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It's a bold, dramatic wine that's very promising.
The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru needed a bit of coaxing from the glass, and a touch of reduction remained in place. Skipping the nose, then, the palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, offering a mixture of black fruit with veins of blue. Structured and perhaps a tad austere for a 2019 Echézeaux, it has plenty of freshness and a persistent spicy finish that lasts 45–60 seconds. Patience will be required, but there’s a very classy Echézeaux waiting to evolve here.
