Tasting notes
Whereas some of Helen Keplinger's 2016s are potent, the 2016 Fuego y Mar is elegant, nuanced and all finesse. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red/purplish berry, blood orange, plum and flowers. Once again, the Fuego y Mar impresses for its purity. Even more importantly, this is a real showcase for what Sonoma Coast Syrah is, and what it can be.

This is so wonderful in the world of syrah with lavender, gunpowder, lead-pencil, asphalt and blue-fruit character. Full-bodied, tight and compressed. Long and beautiful in the finish. A great wine. Yes. Drink now.
From the cooler Sonoma Coast (the Silver Eagle Vineyard), the 2016 Syrah Fuego y Mar spent 16 months in 50% new French oak. It has a vivid bouquet of blueberries, spring flowers, orange blossom, and subtle cured bacon to go with medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins, and a thrilling display of purity and elegance. Drink it over the coming 10-15 years.
The 2016 Syrah Fuego y Mar is composed entirely of Syrah aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak. It has a very deep garnet-purple color and sings of crushed blackcurrants, baked blackberries, dark chocolate, licorice and violets with touches of black tea and hoisin. Full-bodied and richly fruited with a firm frame of rounded tannins, it has amazing vivacity and great persistence. 80 cases produced.
