The 2021 Pinot Noir Louise keeps the taster looking back to the glass as a delicately complex bouquet of exotic spices and dried roses slowly evolves to show rubbed sage, wild strawberries and sweet lavender. It flows across the palate with silken textural waves and polished wild berries enhanced by blood orange hints, all guided by tantalizing acidity. The 2021 folds in upon itself through the finish. As a violet pastille suggestion slowly fades, this tapers off long and staining with a web of fine-grained tannins tugging at the cheeks without slowing its momentum.

A complete expression of the range, the layered 2021 Pinot Noir Louise unfolds with incense, spice box, ripe wild raspberry, and fresh pine. Medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained, polished tannins, it’s ripe with mocha and elegant, savory spice. A lush red now, it will continue to improve with age and have lovely lift on the finish. Drink 2025-2037. This was my second visit to the estate of Domaine Drouhin, where I met with David Millman and assistant winemaker Arron Bell. This benchmark estate was founded in 1987 in the Dundee Hills by the Burgundian estate Maison Joseph Drouhin, and fourth-generation winemaker Veronique Drouhin-Boss oversees the estate today. Given Domaine Drouhin’s commanding presence in the region, it’s always fantastic to see when the wines reach and even exceed expectations across the portfolio, as they have certainly done in the 2021 vintage.
