The 2021 Cote Rotie La Chavaroche is another real success within the vintage's context. Evoking a dense, deep bouquet of spices, violet, dark berries and smoke, it's medium- to full-bodied, dense and seamless with a layered core of fruit and melting tannins, concluding with a long, spicy and ethereal finish. Matured for 24 months in 20% new oak, this cuvée, named Péroline in Europe, is crafted from vines planted on mica-schists soils in the lieu-dit La Chavaroche.

Taut and peppery, the 2021 Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline shows well. Stemminess, graphite, rose petal and a zesty slice of grapefruit add more complexity in the glass. Built around ripe and firm tannins, the medium-bodied 2021 dances on the palate with lifting freshness and ample delicacy. There’s a lovely cool vintage austerity going on here. Allow it three more years in bottle to fully come together.

Coming all from the mica-schists of the Chavaroche lieu-dit and not destemmed, the 2021 Côte Rôtie La Chavaroche (Peroline in Europe) spent two years in 20% new demi-muids. This gorgeous wine is a clear success, offering complex black raspberry, iron, bacon fat, violets, and lavender-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, concentrated, layered, and elegant, it’s an incredibly classy Côte Rôtie. I always love taste with Agnes Levet at her cellar in heart of Ampuis and these wines are as old school Côte Rôtie as it gets. It’s worth pointing out that the cuvée are named differently in the US and Europe, with the Les Journaries (US) and Maestria (EU), and La Chavaroche (US) and Peroline (EU), being the same wine.

Displays potent, mineral-accented dark berry preserve, olive paste and incense aromas that are complemented by floral oil, pipe tobacco and exotic spice flourishes. Chewy, densely packed and sharply focused on the palate, offering intense, spice-laced blackberry, blueberry, bitter cherry, violet pastille and smoky bacon flavors that turn livelier with air. Closes on an emphatic mineral note, with solid thrust, gripping tannins and superb, floral-tinged persistence.
