Score 94/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

The 2021 Syrah comes from the Perilune Vineyard, where vines were planted in sandy soils in 2017, in the Sta. Rita Hills. Made with 100% whole clusters, it's expressive and alluring with pure scents of cassis, bitter chocolate, garrigue and cracked peppercorn. The medium-bodied palate features a concentrated core of floral fruit framed by silky tannins and refreshing acidity, and it has a long, ethereal finish. It's beautiful now and will reward 3-5+ years in the cellar.

The 2021 Ex Post Facto Syrah is all from the new Perilune development, done with 100% stems. Blue/purplish fruit, black pepper, menthol, licorice, lavender and dried herbs all run through this nuanced, layered Syrah. All signs suggest this will be an even better wine as the vines age. It's another superb wine from Greg Brewer.

All Syrah from the Sta. Rita Hills (I'm not sure about the vineyard sources here) and made by Greg Brewer, the deep ruby/plum-hued 2021 Syrah Sta. Rita Hills has textbook aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, gamey meats, bay leaf, ground pepper, and marine-like nuances. With medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, concentrated, layered profile, and flawless balance, it has a distinctly cool climate style while being gorgeously textured, layered, and elegant. It might be the finest vintage of this wine I’ve tasted. Drink bottles over the coming decade.

Fruit from Perilune vineyard. 100% whole-cluster fermented, with 60 days spent on the skins and stems. Casks on average at least 15 years of age. Chopped herbs and underbrush scents are layered over blue fruits. Salty flavours of brown sugar, blackberries, roasted meat and baking spices are wrapped in a fleecy blanket of tannins. Very good acidity keeps this whole package fresh. Unusual, but oddly compelling. (AY)
