2010 Staglin Family Chardonnay Estate

Full medium bright yellow. Aromas and flavors of guava, citrus fruits, fig, toffee, brown spices and toasty oak. Glyceral and sweet but with an edge of acidity giving shape to the rich, chewy mid-palate. Finishes smooth and persistent, with just a trace of warmth.

I tasted a large number of wines at Staglin this year. It is quite clear that quality is on the rise over the last few years under the leadership of winemaker Fredrik Johansson, who previously spent time working with Thomas Rivers Brown. The 2010 Chardonnay is a pretty, generous white laced with expressive tropical fruit supported by clean veins of minerality. The Chardonnay doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but it is consistently terrific and loaded with personality.
