Score 90/100 · Drink 2020-2040, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Oct 2019

From ripe berries picked at 83° Oechsle, fermented in large oak until January or February 2018 and bottled with 9.5% alcohol and 35 grams of residual sugar, the 2017 Im Pitterberg Riesling Kabinett is clear, fresh and spicy on the nose and a bit old-style. Lush and round on the palate, this is a salty, vital and linear, elegant Kabinett with charming fruit and nice, stimulating grip on the finish. This is like a Mojito served with egg cream.

This year’s subtly-sweet Im Pitterberg shares the infectious juiciness of its more overtly-sweet, tank-raised Rheinberg stable mate. Pear and cucumber are tinged with mint, moss and underlain by wet stone on a haunting nose and buoyant, subtly creamy and understated yet luscious palate. Piquancy of pear pip, crunch of cucumber rind, and zest of lime serve for an invigorating counterpoint en route to a bell-clear stone-lined, refreshing, and mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. (For background on the origination of this wine and concerning its style, consult my reviews of its vintage 2015 and vintage 2016 predecessors.)

RS 32 g/l, TA 9.2 g/l. Pretty intense hazelnut nose and very precise but almost painfully young and crisp at the moment. (JR)

Fine fruit, fresh green herbs and just a tasteful whiff of herbaceousness delight the olfactory perception. On the palate the Pitterberg is not trying to impress with exuberance, but uses delicacy of flavour. Very smooth, but with just the right amount of acidity to tantalise the taste buds. Residual sugar is allowed to assist without becoming obtrusive. (MS)
