Tasting notes
(56% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon, 13% petit verdot and 6% cabernet franc) Good deep red. Restrained but sexy aromas of redcurrant and smoke. Suave and nicely perfumed, with a light touch to the flavors of redcurrant, milk chocolate, tobacco and licorice. A silky wine with juicy acidity and building dusty tannins. Mostly from Madrona Ranch fruit.

The outstanding 2006 Fat Boy (a 375-case blend of 56% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) exhibits espresso, coffee, black cherry jam, charcoal, and pain grille characteristics. As its name suggests, this is a fat, succulent wine with loads of fruit, glycerin, purity, and length. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. (Not yet released) Known as Behrens and Hitchcock until the departure of Bob Hitchcock, this artisinal winery on the top of Spring Mountain has changed its name to Erna Schein. The proprietors, Les and Lisa Behrens, continue to fine tune an intriguing portfolio of wines. Because of disappointing results from synthetic closures, they have now gone back to traditional cork. Lisa is widely regarded as one of Napa’s most capable viticulturists, and appears to have a knack for finding forgotten vineyard treasures. In addition to the name change, the Behrens seem to be moving away from varietal names, using instead a series of colorful, often provocative labels. All the following wines are flavorful, exuberant, full-bodied offerings made with indigenous yeasts, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. They represent true low-tech wines. Tel.
