The 2021 Syrah/Grenache Letters to Europe comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard and Larner Vineyard and was matured a total of 19 months in concrete and new French oak (40%). It has a mélange of wild berry fruit on the nose, with wafts of bacon fat, juniper berries, lavender and pie spices. The full-bodied palate is supple and juicy with generous waves of perfumed fruit and a long finish with a flourish of spice and violet. Just 50 cases were made.

The 2021 Letters to Europe (a Grenache and Syrah blend) is laced with dark cherry/plum fruit, lavender, spice and mocha. Like all the 2021s here, the Letters is pretty austere and not especially forthcoming. Even so, it possesses good depth and solid overall balance. Dark blue/purplish fruit, cloves, new leather and licorice build nicely with some coaxing.
A 60/40 split of Syrah and Grenache that comes from the Bien Nacido and Larner vineyards, the 2021 Letters to Europe offers up a rocking bouquet blackberries, ground pepper, spring flowers, and leather that needs air to show at its best. This spicy, complex, medium to full-bodied effort has terrific intensity, a stacked mid-palate, and ripe tannins that carry through the finish. It's a head-turning beauty, that's for sure.
