Score 91+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2013

(from a vineyard near the Merus winery, between St. Helena and Calistoga): Dark red-ruby. Tight, high-pitched aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and violet accented by peppery herbs; quite Old World in style. Then densely packed and a bit unrefined, with a distinct medicinal cast to the flavors of black fruits, licorice, tobacco and loam. Shows good rocky depth but betrays a slight youthful bitterness. The tannins started out a bit dusty and dry but showed more sweetness as the wine began to open in the glass. A very firm cabernet, bespeaking the elevated acidity of the vintage.

Cabaud's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb follow up to the 2009, a wine that is just as brilliant today as it was last year. Most of the fruit is sourced from the Seiller vineyard on Glass Mountain in St. Helena. The super-talented Luc Morlet is the winemaker. Smoke, scorched earth, tar, new leather and black fruit are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Mon Hommage. A deep, intense wine, the Mon Hommage is endowed with serious power wrapped around a core of focused, intense minerality. Crushed rocks and graphite are some of the nuances that add complexity on the finish. Today, the 2010 is totally closed in on itself, so readers will have to be a bit patient.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Mon Hommage bursts from the glass with dark red plums, black cherries, menthol, tar and licorice. It is a big, muscular wine endowed with considerable energy and richness. The powerful, structured finish bodes well for the future. In 2010 the blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot.
